EL CHRISXIAN
Back in the day before smart phones reigned king, and media was everything but social, El Chrisxian was born in East LA. In those days Los Angeles looked different. The things that remained the same throughout his childhood, all the way to his adolescence, and then onto his on adulthood was music. Before El Chrisxian began DJing he was immersed in music. It was around him, it consumed his environment, and penetrated his ears. His family played music from sun up to sun down, his neighbors had music blaring out their windows in those Section 8 apartments in Echo Park, with every passing car one could hear radio stations like Power 106, K-LOVE, KROQ playing whatever song was popular at the time. Songs carried him through every chapter of his life. Songs ranged from those played on his mothers old Pioneer stereo, by the likes of Toni Braxton, Los Bukis, Bronco, El Genereal, Bob Marley, Juan Gabriel just to name a few.
As El Chrisxian began getting older he was fortunate enough to have an old Compaq desktop with DSL, a combination that opened his world up to sounds never before heard. Newly discovered artist were illegally downloaded from the likes of Napster, Limewire, Kazaa, Morpheus. It was where anyone with internet connection and a broke pocket could become the owner of any song imaginable. Yet with all the legal repercussions that could have been had El Chrisxian did not care. There was an auditory thirst that could not be quenched. Gluttonous ears were in constant need of sound. Hip Hop, Jazz, Rock, DooWop, Oldies, Instrumentals, Bossa Nova sufficed but only temporarily.
The format for acquiring music changed. First came the demise of seeking illegal downloaded songs. Then came the discovery of streaming services. Music was now readily available and with a simple click of a button music was there for the taking. Yet something was missing. That missing component appeared itself at a time when the world was as experiencing a global pandemic. Everything shut down but it was during those early days of the Pandemic that El Chrisxian rediscovered the joys of music once more and it was that discovery that opened up a new world.
Djing entered into El Chrisxian’s life, swiftly and unexpectedly. First through a Pioneer controller and then through Vinyl. Through that journey crate digging was discovered and the hunt for great albums began. DJing in front of crowds for parties, events, and bars followed. Then an opportunity to have a radio show at KCHUNG presented itself and with that came the conception of Throwaway Tuesdays, a radio show that showcases those throwaway records that were neglected and forgotten. Soon after a community, Metro Sessions, of like minded individuals with similar admiration and love for music was found. All the while the journey of making music occurred simultaneously.
DJ El Chrisxian has been Djing for a couple of years now usually with his beautiful wife Amanda Raye. He also interviews artist for his podcast, The Art Is Podcast, Where Artist Define What Art Is.
